Les Cubes


Walking through the stately Arabic door gracing the entrance to Les Cubes, one is overtaken by the prevalence of air and light and the stunning sea views that make the dazzling Mediterranean visible from every corner, for this inviting restaurant is just a few steps away from one of Marbella’s most popular soft sand beaches.

Les Cubes, ensconced on the Golden Mile, is famed as much for its stunningly designed interiors (contemporary furniture is married to floor-to-ceiling glass doors, to make the most of the dazzling view) as for its exquisite food, representing the very best in world cuisine and service which reflects the standards of times gone by.

Here, waiters carefully prepare a tempting steak tartare or crêpe Suzette by your table, adding ingredients so that you enjoy your dish just the way you like it…

Those who are lucky enough to have discovered the secret hideaway that is Les Cubes, know that the establishment is divided into three distinct spaces, each bearing its own particular vibe. To the left is To Be or Not To Be (a swish bar/lounge area where you can enjoy a Hendrick’s G&T with a twist of cucumber or a sophisticated cocktail).

This is my favourite spot for after-work drinks, followed by a walk on the beach. The central area, called Kalinka Malinka, is the ideal setting for lunch. With its bright, sunny interiors, it evokes the very best of the good life on the Coast.

To the right is C’est La Vie, a gourmet lover’s paradise where haute cuisine can be enjoyed by night.
There are many reasons why Les Cubes is one of Marbella’s most magical restaurants.

First of all, the service – the friendly maitre’d and waiters (including Gala, famed for her incredible steak tartare preparation skills) are attentive, warm and professional and the elegant attire they don adds sartorial elegance to the surrounds.

Secondly, there is the produce – the freshest meat, tuna, sea bass and other delights, reveal that no expense is spared when it comes to creating a truly exquisite meal, where the price reasonably reflects the quality of every dish.

Thirdly, there is the ambience… few restaurants boast this location, smack bang in the centre of Marbella’s most luxurious boulevard, a stone’s throw from the golden sands of the beach. My recent lunch, enjoyed with two colleagues, was as excellent as we recalled. Every bite was delicious, from the starters to the dessert.

We began by sharing a lovely fresh tuna tartare (bearing a light lime dressing but really allowing the Barbate tuna to reveal its plump freshness) and a platter of homemade croquettes – so crisp on the outside and creamy on the inside, I resolved to order this all for myself next time!

Les Cubes is also a haven of outstanding ham – we enjoyed a plate of fine, hand-cut slices, served with airy toasted bread and fresh tomato, as well as a full-bodied extra virgin olive oil. We washed our entrées down with a fruity white Shaya Rueda, perfect on a balmy summer’s day.

The mains were equally appealing. The staff whipped up a generous portion of steak tartare for one of my companions, making sure the blend of ingredients was adjusted to her taste.

We also enjoyed a super tender entrecôte, aged for 45 days, served with chunky crisp Belgian chips. Then there was one of my favourite dishes at Les Cubes – the lightly seared tuna covered in black sesame and ginger – the sesame adding a wonderful flavour and texture to the fresh Barbate tuna.

We shared a sweet I somehow imagine the likes of Bette Davis or Joan Crawford enjoying at the Ritz – an airy crêpe suzette, prepared once again with great care (and a dash of Grand Marnier) before our eyes by the diligent staff.

Les Cubes reflects the essence of what makes Marbella’s gastronomy great – a respect for fine produce, traditional cooking methods and an elegant seaside setting.

The caring service and swish bar add the final touches of excellence that make for a memorable experience, though we will certainly be returning often enough to relive the encounter time and time again…
