In our brand new hybrid edition, we have slightly different rules that apply when creating advertising. We continue to deliver a page-turner magazine experience to our readers and you now have the opportunity to include attention-grabbing interactive elements and direct links to your web and social platforms, to create a deeper interest for your product or service.
Please use the same sizes as the printed magazine. The full page size for example remains at 230mm x 300mm. Click here for the full size chart for different advertising modules.
MULTIMEDIA
OPTIMISING FOR DIGITAL MULTIMEDIA ARTWORK
- No bleed, or crop marks are necessary.
- The PDF file should be in RGB and 150 pixels/inch resolution.
- Supply the double-page advert as two separate pages.
- If designing a double page, try not to place text elements over the spine as on some platforms the pages may be viewed separately.
- It is recommended to use a video or animation, to keep the reader’s interest longer.
- If using a video, it has to be at least 1/6th of the page so the player can embed correctly and autoplay is initiated. If the video is too small, the frame won’t load the player resulting sound and other controllers not be able to be used.
- If using a video it is essential to include a placeholder image of exactly the same ratio as the video, and that the video doesn’t contain any black strips vertically or horizontally. This is most often 16:9 ratio, but any ratio videos can be embedded provided the space reserved for it is exactly fitting.
- It is recommended to use a larger type size than the print version.
- It is recommended to design buttons or other elements for direct interactions, call or visit a project, take a tour etc…
- If we have to host or overlay any links or other interactive material, please provide them all separately with your final advert file.
MULTIMEDIA

Detailed Artwork Supply Directions
Once you have reserved advertising space in Essential Magazine, we can help you through the production process by designing your artwork or by pointing you in the right direction for making your own design. Our publications are printed in high quality so all editorial and advertising content goes through rigorous control to ensure optimum reproduction.
On this page we cover the most important technical details your supplied file will have to include, and how you can achieve that. It is very important that you prepare all the elements of your design separately before you begin to make a composition and that you use the right software. Choose the section you are having trouble with.
IMAGES
HOW TO WORK WITH IMAGES IN A DESIGN COMPOSITION
The first and most important element of any artwork is the imagery included. No matter what content you choose for your design if the image quality is not adequate, your artwork will reflect negatively on your company and the magazine. We require all images included to be high resolution and clearly high quality. What does this mean?
YOUR IMAGE QUALITY CHECK LIST
- Photography qualities are met: sufficient lighting, no pixelation, clarity of detail when zoomed in, sharp contrasts. The larger the image will be printed, the more these factors become important. If you have doubts about your main image quality, you can always consult with us.
- CMYK colour mode: Convert all your images to CMYK colour mode and adjust their levels before you start working with them in your layout. Leaving colour conversion for the end stages of final print-file conversion leaves your artwork open to errors.
- Set print resolution: Convert all your images to 300dpi before you start working with them in your layout. This is a good time to check that your files are sufficient quality for the size you want to print them. Check your original pixel size and by changing the dpi to 300 distribution, you can immediately see how many cm of paper it will cover in print, in the desired quality.
COPY
ABOUT THE TEXT YOU INCLUDE
It is very important that you work with text that is fully checked and double-checked for mistakes. Even if English is not your native language, once you put your message in English, it is expected that it is grammatically and stylistically correct. We are happy to advise on your copy, just send us a separate text file before you begin creating your composition. We expect a fully translated and composed copy. If you have trouble with that, for your complete peace of mind, we can also provide translation and copywriting as a separate paid-for service.
COLOURS
MAKE SURE YOUR COLOURS ARE RIGHT
All colours have to be set in CMYK for the printing process. RGB or Pantone colours are invalid and not processable. Make sure all your swatches are set up in CMYK and that all links brought into the file are set up in CMYK.
POSSIBLE UNINTENTIONAL COLOUR ERRORS
- EPS (for example logo) files often contain Pantone colours which are embedded in the print ready PDF automatically. This will flag the file through our checking process and we will return it with a request for the error to be fixed.
- Sometimes you may pick a colour from a picture that was linked as an RGB file and the swatch created will be created in RGB.
It is our recommendation for you to convert and save all files you plan to include in your layout to CMYK so at the time of print-ready file creation nothing goes wrong.
LAYOUT
THE INS AND OUTS OF LAYING OUT
Depending on the format of your advertising, we supply you with the full specs regarding the size. In case you contracted a double or full page, you will receive the trimmed size, to which you have to add an additional bleed area, when you are setting up your document.
Your content on the page should fit within the trimmed size, leaving a ‘quiet-area’ around the margins of the page. In case of a double page, you will also have to take the binding into account when you create your design.
In case of a framed advert size, (half-page, third, quarter or sixth) you don’t have to worry about trim and bleed, you can work to the full size as a box. Your design will have white space around it once placed in the magazine layout.
YOUR LAYOUT CHECK LIST FOR TRIMMED SIZES (DPS, FULL PAGE)
- SIZE Set document size to trimmed size given (230x300mm per full page) A double-page should be set up as 2x full pages, facing.
- BLEED Set 3mm bleed outside of your document size on all four sides (When designing, extend your background to this extra space outside of the page to allow for cutting inaccuracies. This 3mm margin will be cut off when the page is trimmed but this is expected to vary a few mm in either direction).
- QUIET-AREA Set a minimum of 10mm margin on all sides within your document and don’t place text in this area. Try to align all your content to this margin for the composition to have an organised feel. Content ’stuck’ to the sides makes your artwork look unattractive and unprofessional.
- BINDING On the binding side the quiet-area is even more important to respect, because depending on where it’s placed in the magazine, your page will curve into the binding, making content on that side less visible. Count with this especially when designing a double-page and using images and text spreading over both pages.
- TEXT SIZE Large text is great to grab attention but remember to keep it in check. There is a certain size that the human eye will no longer focus on when scanning a page. If a block of text is too large, it may be missed. Same is true when the text blocks are disorganised or are too close to each other. Organise your text so the larger lead is fairly centred on the page and body text is not too large and has quiet-space around it so it is comfortable to read.
SOFTWARE
WHAT IS EACH PROGRAMME DESIGNED FOR?
It is recommended that you use the programs of the Adobe Suite for your designs. It comprises of many different software that serve to perform the different tasks of the design stages. For optimum results, you should use each program for what it is created for!
- Adobe Photoshop For photo editing, preparing images for the correct resolution, size and colour mode. Making cutouts and saving in the correct image format.
- Adobe Illustrator To create and prepare vector images such as logos and drawings.
- Adobe InDesign To create the layout and composition for books, pages or posters.
PDF FILE
HOW TO EXPORT TO PRINT-READY PDF?
Once your design is final, created in Adobe InDesign, press File –> Export and choose ‘Adobe PDF (Print) as format. This will open the panel where you can adjust the settings for your print-ready PDF.
Choosing the ‘High-Quality Print’ preset should include most settings already preselected that you need for the print-ready file, but make sure to adjust the following options correctly:
COMPATIBILITY
- Acrobat 4 (PDF 1.3)
GENERAL
- Pages: Export as ‘Pages’ (in case of a double page design it’s important not to export as a ‘Spread’)
COMPRESSION
- Colour and Grayscale images downsampling to 300 pixels per inch
- Compression: ‘Automatic (JPEG)’
- Image Quality: Maximum
MARKS AND BLEEDS
- Select ‘All Printer Marks’
- Bleed and Slug: Select ‘Use Document Bleed Settings’
OUTPUT
- Color Conversion: ‘Convert to Destination’
- Destination: Working CMYK – U.S. Web Coated
ADVANCED
- Transparency Flattener: ‘High Resolution’
If you are using a Pantone colour in your design, please ask for further guidance. Please note that we print exclusively in CMYK colour mode on our interior pages. Pantone is only permitted on the cover pages and requires to be separately negotiated.
Once you have set up all options to be correct, you can save your preset and next time use it with only one press of a button.

INTO THE FUTURE
Over the last 20 years, the essential brand has enjoyed unparalleled support from a large number of clients and undoubtedly this proved instrumental in its success. Conversely, the magazine as a marketing tool played an essential role in the prosperity of many of these highly regarded companies, which forged us into one big, happy Marbella family. Marbella may seem small and transitional but its affluent cosmopolitan population provides affiliation to the wider world around it. So how does essential continue to reinvent itself, month by month, reaching, inspiring and compelling residents and jet-setters alike, while popularising the luxurious, Marbella way of life within its boundaries and beyond?
Once upon a time, we all sat in banks, doctors’ offices and beauty salons waiting for our turn, leafing through the magazines laying around on the coffee table. Now, being bombarded with endless information online, we fiddle with our mobile gadgets, texting friends or checking social media instead. Whether targeted by cleverly devised online marketing messages or being immersed in our friends’ networks, we are ultimately looking for that feel-good moment in finding quality content that interests us. But can we find it, or are we just wasting a lot of precious time?
No matter what your nationality is, if you are in Marbella, you are interested in Marbella. There is nothing like holding a glossy magazine in hand, checking out beautifully presented pages, indulging in arresting visual stimuli of million-euro villas or mouth-watering close-ups of our favourite food. Essential doesn’t only look good but also provides impulse for the mind. Its interesting and informative articles are not only examples of fine journalism but are also relevant, passionately written and authoritative in their field. This combination of qualities is hard to find online and it is why we believe Essential Magazine in its paper format will carry on thriving for many years to come. But what happens when you can no longer find a copy or you have returned home to the far East or the cold North? We have been working on that!
Last year in 2018, we embarked on a mission to expand and drive essential’s online presence.
NEW WEBSITE
In the year leading up to our 20th anniversary we have designed a new ‘no-distraction’ website, where we can present our quality content similarly to how it’s done in the magazine. Did you ever start reading something interesting online only to find yourself checking out the shoes you didn’t buy yesterday, or finding yourself on a different site you decided was a waste of time half an hour later? I can sympathise! We opted for no busy sidebars, no advertising banners, flashy images and overflowing carousels which can drive the viewer crazy getting lost in all the noise. We wanted to create a clean platform that can provide the visitor with a quiet, non-intrusive reading experience, with easy navigation and seamless mobile adaptability. More and more, multimedia will accompany our presentation of articles, which will add a new and fresh dimension to our paper content. This will be signposted in the magazine, as we produce new videos for increasing numbers of articles. On our homepage the latest additions are clearly visible, what’s more, we started an email service twice a month containing direct links to seven new article entries, so one can truly access only the topics they may be interested in. A new addition still in beta stage is our live site-chat, which makes it quick and easy to contact us in real time with any questions or enquiries.
SOCIAL MEDIA
To support our web content, last year we also created and executed a carefully designed strategy to elevate our social media profiles. At this time, we have over 20 thousand Facebook followers, nearly 10 thousand Instagram connections and a daily post schedule on both, plus on Twitter and on our LinkedIn company profile. We take pride in showcasing everything interesting and fun that this beautiful corner of Europe has to offer, its exciting multicultural vibe, luxurious lifestyle and experiences to be discovered. We post videos, photos and links to the stories that we publish on-line, so our webpages become accessible from each of the different social platforms as well. We aim to create conversations, interaction and, in time, become a reliable go-to source for those who want to make the best of their Marbella living.
GLOBAL REACH
So, all in all, we’d like to extend the Essential family we have formed in the last 20 years with our amazing clients, to our readers too. We aim to become the hub of an exclusive ‘Marbella-but-Global’ community where we involve all citizens of this world who nurture the love and passion for everything this part of Spain has to offer: those who enjoy scrumptious dining, sumptuous interiors, mighty motoring, leisurely beach life, cutting edge technology, innovative beauty and health care, luxurious lodging, sophisticated architecture and of course the multi-faceted nature, compelling culture and the amazing weather we have here. Through our recently evolved and ever-growing online presence, our new mission going forward is now to locate these global readers, connect them to this community, and for everyone’s benefit, to let our precious product, Essential Magazine, flourish for another 20 years to come.

20 ESSENTIAL YEARS
To mark essential’s special birthday month, we ask Publisher and Director, Iain Blackwell, about the magazine’s trajectory over the last 20 years.
Iain, can you tell us how Essential came to life?
Yes, in early 1999 an opportunity arose to assemble the necessary components to launch a luxury lifestyle magazine in Marbella. Certain key staff members were available, an investment was secured, and the market was on an upwardly mobile trajectory.
Did you have any experience in the local magazine industry beforehand?
After arriving in Marbella, my continual work experience since 1987 had been with local and international magazines, principally in a sales directorship capacity. This intervening period of 12 years endowed me with the knowledge and expertise to finally launch a title of my own.
How was Essential received by the people of Marbella?
The launch party itself was a resounding success, with over 600 people coming to celebrate with us at Bora Bora in San Pedro and the momentum just continued from the outset. The product seemed to strike a cord with readers and clients alike, gaining in popularity so that, incredibly, we were already in profit by the 3rd edition.
What are the cornerstone attributes of the magazine?
The focus and foundation of Essential is its editorial content. This requires meticulous planning in advance and involves mobilising a string of great writers. Building from this, we have always presented a quality product both in terms of design and printing, just as we have consistently maintained an extensive circulation every month, coupled with a highly controlled distribution function.
What has made Essential survive during all these years?
Maintaining the above strategy, evolving with the times, hitting the streets regularly in volume at the start of each month, not filling the pages with advertorial and, in general, providing a product that top advertisers chose to support.
What about your core team, tell us about them
You are talking about a great bunch of people – Andi, Marisa, Sus, Inma, Momo, Kev – who have grown into their positions and whose loyalty knows no bounds, who regularly pull together to achieve great things. At times it is intense and stressful but it is a labour of love and we are like a well-oiled machine.
And are there others?
There are lots – Belinda, Michel, Jackie, Addo and his team, Jairo, Mariano, Jan, Réka, Tony, David, Carlos, Rik, Cristina, Russell, Phil. Just like with those above, the majority of our staff have been with the business long term. It kind of makes us like a family and we sometimes have group get-togethers, which are always enjoyable occasions.
Have you had any special Essential events?
Over the years, many! Two at Bora Bora, three at Puro Beach, two at Estepona Bull Ring, also at Tibu, D.O.MAR and several versions of the Essential Awards at the Hotel Puente Romano.
And are you having a party to celebrate this month’s anniversary?
Of course! We have a tremendous venue lined-up and will be inviting all our close associates and loyal clients over the coming days. You will be able to see shots from the event in next month’s issue.
What are you particularly proud of?
Having a team like the above to depend on. Having worked with the same printer for 20 years (who are now also like family). Having printed on recyclable paper since day one (even though it had to be imported from Finland to begin with). Having maintained our editorial integrity and our popularity. Having the clients we do supporting the magazine – many of them have been advertising with us for years and some from the very start.
Where do you see Essential having reached now?
It’s nice to take stock after two decades. Having become the market leader back in 2005, we have maintained that position ever since. Essential is respected and collected, and its valued reception is the driving force that inspires us to continually try to out-do ourselves.
And, what can we expect in the future?
On the printed side, we intend to continue striving to produce the kind of editions that our supporters have come to know and love. Breaching the digital age, we have been making a big drive on elevating our Social Media platforms and on developing a dynamic web interface. Our resident Digital & Creative Director, Andrea, will tell you more about this on this page.

Editorial Submissions
Essential magazine prides itself on being a local publication with a strong community focus, so we hold feedback from our readers and dialogue with local businesses as a crucial part of our success. If you have an interesting event, opening or news you’d like to share with our readers, please send an e-mail to news@essentialmagazine.com.
How to submit information to essential magazine:
1. For events taking place on a specific date:
As we are a monthly magazine, early notification of your event is crucial if our print deadlines are to be met. As soon as you know the date, time and details the event is taking place, please send the information to news@essentialmagazine.com.
For our Enterprise section, we need to receive your communication by the 10th of the month preceding publication (for instance, for the December edition, we would need to receive your information by November 10). Sometimes we receive information post-deadline or post-event. Bearing in mind space availability and newsworthiness, we can still publish your event/news in the following issue if you send all the required information (see below).
Format of Information:
Text: For our Enterprise or News sections, please send a short text of around 150 words maximum and a high resolution photograph (300 dpi, jpg/TIF format) to news@essentialmagazine.com. If you are a business, please specify your office address, landline and website (if you have one). If you do not have an office address or landline, we should at least include a mobile phone number.
Photography: Many times, the reception of a low resolution photo (which looks fine on the computer screen but is actually tiny when printed out at magazine quality resolution) slows down the process of communication. Please send uncompressed pictures taken with a 3 megapixel camera at the very least.
2. For general news that is NOT time-specific
You may be a business stocking an exciting new line of products, or proud about your recent move to new offices; likewise, you could wish to inform the community of a new Managing Director or executive that has joined your team.
For any general news items you’d like to share, please send an e-mail to news@essentialmagazine.com. Our focus is on items that are truly newsworthy (an important business feat, an anniversary, a fundraising event, etc).
3. Submitting feature ideas
If you have a fantastic idea you think would make a great story (such as a beautiful house we might consider featuring for our Décor section, or an interesting person doing something new and exciting), send your idea to editorial@essentialmagazine.com
4. Freelance journalists
If you are a freelance journalist wishing to sell a story, please send a summary of your article to editorial@essentialmagazine.com
Booking an Advert
YOUR PLAN OF ACTION:
1. Decide on the length of your campaign
You can advertise with essential for any period, from 1 month to an ongoing indefinite contract. The length of campaign you choose will affect the discount available starting with a 3 month commitment. Once again, think about your advertising goals and plan ahead a little. We usually recommend a minimum 3 month campaign so as to build brand awareness in the market place.
2. Decide on the size of your advert
Think about your message and what you need to say. Take a look at the magazine, either in print or online and see what size would suit you. A full list of available advert sizes along with the cost of each can be found in the media kit.
3. Take a note of our deadlines
As the magazine is published monthly, we are able to give clients general schedule guidelines that apply to sales and design. We will need you to reserve your space in the magazine by the 15th of the month previous to publication. If we are producing your advert on your behalf, we will require the content and design brief between the 15th and 17th in order to create, proof and approve your advert by the print deadline which is usually around the 22nd. If you are producing print ready artwork, this can be supplied by the 22nd. (Please note that if these dates fall on a weekend, it is in your best interest to work towards the last working day before the date rather than after). The only exception is the Christmas edition which is brought forward by several days. Please contact us if you require specific deadlines for these editions.
4. Gather together your material
We have a dedicated Production Manager who will be your main point of contact for all design queries. When you have your materials together, they can be sent via email and the design process will begin.

STATS
Popularity and Integrity Over 20 Years of History
Marbella has a highly transitional multi-national audience, which means that each edition is found and read by a large variety of people. Alongside the all-year residents that seek out a copy at the beginning of each month, essential is redistributed mid-month to ensure continued availability for seasonal visitors as well. In spite of our extensive distribution, the copies often ‘fly-off’ the shelves, so we created an interactive digital edition that can be accessed world-wide. Operating over two decades, essential remains the most popular local choice with readers and advertisers alike.
